Raina Bundy |
Raina Bundy has more than 20 years of experience
as a songwriter and music executive. Her uncle was
a percussionist for the late jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie and,
as a child, Ms. Bundy would go to their rehearsals all the time. |
In 1970, Ms. Bundy was hired by Herb Alpert
and Jerry Moss to work at A&M Records. She learned
much from these music pioneers and soon gained their respect. "When
Herb heard that I had 'ears,' he would call me into the studio
to listen to his records before they were released. They
helped to really prepare me." |
After A&M, Ms. Bundy went to Columbia
Pictures. The head of Columbia's music division, Dick
Berris, "heard my songs, he called in Bob Holmes (Sony,
Vice President, Business Affairs) and I received a songwriting
deal with Columbia Pictures." Ms. Bundy then went
on to write music for artists like Phyliss Hyman, Blue Magic
and Deniece Williams. |
Eventually she was invited to be the head
of Lection Records, the Gospel music division of Polygram. Her
roster of artists then included Keith Staten, Edwin Hawkins and
Witness. Later, Ms. Bundy established her own label,
Fixit Records. |
Fixit won a Grammy in 1993 (Best Gospel
Album) for Edwin Hawkins' "Music and Arts Seminar"
album. While she was running Fixit, Ms. Bundy was also hired
by Columbia Records as Vice President of A&R and Marketing.
While working at Columbia, Ms. Bundy was Executive Producer
of a Christmas album featuring artists such as Patti LaBelle,
Lou Rawls, Anointed, Oleta Adams, and Commissioned.
Impressed by the success of this album, Sony approached Ms. Bundy
to head Harmony Records. |
In 1997, Ms. Bundy became Vice President/General
Manager of Harmony Records, the Sony-distributed Gospel label
whose rosters include Oleta Adams, Nancy Jackson, Pastor Bam
Crawford, Dawkins & Dawkins, Kenneth Copeland, and Iyanla
Vanzant. |
In its first year, 1998, Harmony was named
the #1 Gospel indie label by Billboard magazine. The
company also received a Grammy nomination for Adams' debut CD,
"Come Walk With Me" (Best Contemporary Soul Gospel
Album), the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Gospel, and three
nominations for Dove Awards. |
In 1999, Harmony continued their industry
accolades with a Grammy Award for Deniece Williams' "This
is My Song" as Best Contemporary Pop Gospel Album. Bundy
says, "God has proven that although we're a small label,
He'll use us for His glory as long as we keep following Him." |
