Catherine Moore

Do you really want to learn about the music industry? Then come hear a top educator with real-world experience who teaches strategic marketing/management and genre evolution/A&R at one of the country's most prestigious institutions. Professor Moore will also be prepared to discuss cutting-edge, practical and career-building topics such as:

  1. the commercialization and digitalization of music (Professor Moore's essay on this subject will appear in a book to be published later this year)

  2. how to accurately identify the products and services that are competitive with music industry products and services

  3. what you can learn in a music business program to prepare yourself for a career in the music industry

In 1981, Catherine Moore began managing a retail store in Liverpool, England.  Since then, she has been Sales Manager for Harmonia Mundi Records (London), International Marketing Manager for Nimbus Records (Wales), and a Marketing Director for A&M Records (New York).  She started her consultancy business in 1990 and worked on strategic management and marketing issues for American, Canadian, and British clients.

Professor Moore came to NYU in 1995, where she is the Program Director of its Music Business Program (graduate and undergraduate).  NYU is one of the few institutions in the U.S. to offer a bachelor of music in the music business field.  Professor Moore's many successful candidates are highly motivated and prepared to take advantage of a professional program set in the world's music business capitol, which includes an interactive classroom atmosphere, internships, participation in the program's record company, the NYU concert program board, radio station WNYU, and its Music Business Association.

A graduate of Bishop's University, Canada, and the Conservatoire de Musique in Montreal, Professor Moore completed a Ph.D. in musicology at The University of Liverpool, England, in 1991.  Her doctoral thesis was published as a book, she contributes record and concert reviews to American Record Guide, and she has been commissioned to write for the Revised New Grove Dictionary of Music.

Her past and present professional affiliations include NARAS Board of Governors, the Classical Screening Committee for the Grammy Awards, International Association of Business Communicators, Royal Musical Association, American Musicological Society, and Association for Recorded Sound Collections.
