David Pakman

David Pakman's Myplay.com is an online music company that allows consumers to create digital "lockers" for their music collections. A recent deal with the AOL music properties -- Winamp and Spinner -- makes this unique service available to AOL's nearly 80 million consumers. (Billboard 4/8/00).

The company attracted industry attention when Kittie, a new hardcore rock band, used Myplay.com as part of its internet strategy to create and build its word-of-mouth buzz. Visitors to the website were offered a free download. (Billboard 3/25/00).

How did it all begin? As a Rock musician, David Pakman, got close to getting a record deal and even performed with Squeeze. But he became disenchanted with the early '90s music industry, where executives were still behind the curve on emerging technologies.

So, with his music industry background, Mr. Pakman formed the Apple Music Group at Apple Computer and quickly became a marketing wizard. "I [met] presidents of record labels, producers, managers, artists and talked about [how] the Internet was going to impact music."  Larry Rosen, founder of Jazz label GRP, shared Mr. Pakman's vision. Mr. Pakman soon became the Vice President of Business Development at Rosen's N2K, Inc. -- the first company to make digital music downloads commercially available. Mr. Pakman quickly forged strategic partnerships with AOL, Infoseek, Disney and other internet companies.

After N2K merged with CDNow, Mr. Pakman founded Myplay.com with his Apple Computer colleague Doug Camplejohn. Mr. Camplejohn was a pivotal member of the team that invented and produced QuickTime, the pioneer video and sound compression system, which was the most successful Apple software product ever shipped.  Messrs. Pakman and Camplejohn soon recruited other talented executives with experience at a wide range of companies such as Sony Online Ventures, Time Warner, Columbia House, QVC, RCA Records, Columbia Records, MCA, and even Rolling Stone magazine.

Some of the many media outlets that have reported on this dynamic music internet company include The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Daily News, CNN Interactive, USA Today, and The Hollywood Reporter.
