Mitch Weiss

Where and how does a manager learn what he/she needs to know?  How does an artist know if the manager is knowledgeable and honest?  Does the manager have the experience to protect the artist from unscrupulous promoters and record/production deals?

Mr. Weiss will discuss a first-ever opportunity for current and would-be managers -- certification! Broadway producers know that they are getting capable managers because there is an apprenticeship and certification program in place involving seminars and testing.  And the manager gets medical insurance, a pension and other benefits.  The music industry has nothing even close.  But you will learn how this can be made possible -- a great opportunity for managers, artists and everyone involved in the chain.

Mr. Weiss has over 22 years of Broadway experience. At the New York Shakespeare Festival, he worked on "The Pirates of Penzance" (Linda Ronstadt) and over 120 other shows.  His first show as an ATPAM Company Manager was "A Chorus Line," going on to manage over a dozen shows such as Tony winner "The Grapes of Wrath."  Mr. Weiss also managed the Big Apple Circus at Lincoln Center, as well as on tour, and then did a brief stint as a Broadway press agent.  In Los Angeles, he was General Manager at Disney Theatrical setting up plans to launch "Beauty and the Beast" in over eight nations.

He returned to Broadway for "On The Waterfront" and toured nationally with "State Fair."  As a personal manager, Mr. Weiss procured roles for multiple Gold Medal Olympiad Greg Louganis in Off-Broadway hits such as "Jeffrey" and "The Only Thing Worse," and co-produced Donna McKechnie (Tony winner; "A Chorus Line") in a new London musical last year.  Last Spring, Mr. Weiss was General Manager for Tony-nominated "Golden Child" on Broadway, a theatre manager for "Titanic" and "Rent," and on the Board of Governors for ATPAM (a Broadway union).  He is President of MW Entertainment Group and teaches "Managing Pop/Rock Artists" at New York University.  He is also the long-time manager of Disco icons Village People!
