The Musician's Guide Through The Legal Jungle
by Joy R. Butler

From the perspective of one who is not as familiar with music industry terms as a lawyer would be, I would absolutely recommend 'The Musician's Guide Through the Legal Jungle.'

This audio book gradually takes the listener through various problems that every songwriter or recording artist will encounter in their career, such as the copyright of songs, and the choosing of the professionals who will represent you.

The information is presented in the form of a conversation, giving the opportunity for more difficult points to be questioned and explained. The explanations given are clear and simplistic without being patronizing, and carefully explain the rights that the individual has in every instance.

Usefully, at the end of each of the five chapters, a summary is presented, providing the listener with a chance to absorb the important points again.  I was struck by the fact that while the cassette tapes give excellent legal advice, this is balanced by valuable information regarding other aspects of a musical career, such as the qualities you should look for when signing with a personal agent.  The two tapes are accompanied by a useful booklet, that further illustrates such complex points as the calculation of the division of royalties, and also provides definitions of terms used.

The audio cassette format could be seen as a disadvantage, being less quick to refer to than a book. However, this could also be seen as an attractive feature as the information can be listened to while you're jogging or driving!
