The Musician's
Guide To The Music Buiness
Produced by Dick
D'Anjolell |
|

|
|
I came across this video years
before I started The Circle and kept a copy on file because I
thought it was so good.
Recently, I rediscovered the forgotten video in my archives and
knew then and there that I had to get another copy for The Circle.
So what is it about this video that I like so much? |
|
|
Well... I like the fact that it's
a video. There are many good books about the business.
But, like it or not, the present generation is much more
TV-oriented than book-oriented. I can see a group of musicians,
indie label owners, management partners, producers, etc., getting
together on an evening with some drinks and chips and watching
the video together. Press rewind if you want to
go over an important point. Press pause if you want
to jot down some notes or discuss an issue with your buddies.
Try doing that with a book! |
|
|
It also helps bring the business
to life when you can see and hear the advice coming from the
lips of actual label and publishing executives, club owners,
lawyers, managers and the like. It simply makes more of
an impact than reading a clinically dry quotation on a printed
page. And when you do your networking, you'll at least
have an idea as to what some of these people look like so that
you more easily spot them in a club or music conference. The
interviews include representatives from MCA, Mercury, Sony, EMI,
BMI, ASCAP and many others. |

|
This hour-plus video is broken
down into eight sections -- Playing Out, Creating A
Buzz, It's A Business, Managers and Lawyers,
Conferences and Seminars, Getting Serious, A&R
and Publishing, and It's About People. |
|
|
Creating a Buzz is a must-see. It sums
up much of what I have been advising clients for years and what
I have been explaining at lectures and conferences. And
it's no surprise that I am also recommending the Managers
and Lawyers section. |
|
|
And finally, I really like the
section on Conferences and Seminars. Listen to what
these seasoned pros have to say about the importance of networking
and education. Then RSVP for a Circle meeting! |
