The Heart of the Artist
By Rory Noland

Rory Noland's "The Heart of the Artist" has made me paranoid.  I'm convinced that the author has been following me around for years collecting source material for the book he subtitles "A character building guide for you and your ministry team."
But make no mistake about it.  "The Heart of the Artist" is not just for those involved in music ministry.  It's for anyone who is involved with artists -- managers, producers, label executives, booking agents, promoters, publicists and, of course, artists themselves.
Mr. Noland candidly discusses what makes artists tick -- the moodiness, the perfectionism, the egos and all the other traits that make many artists difficu..., uh, let's just say challenging to work with.  As the long time music director at Bill Hybel's Willow Creek Community Church in Illinois, he has acquired a lot of experience dealing with the fires that drive artists -- as well as battling his own personality quirks.
As a result, the book does more than to merely furnish a character analysis.  It also provides many chapters of practical suggestions for how to tame the mind -- or heart -- of the artist.  Each chapter is rich with Biblical and historical commentary on the subject and Mr. Noland is keen to provide detailed narratives based on his real-world experiences.  Suggestions are made to resolve the classic variety of conflicts that artists struggle with such as servanthood vs. stardom, excellence vs. perfectionism, management of the emotions, etc.  And each chapter ends with probing questions for group discussion as well as with challenging self-help action steps.
Needless to say, I highly recommend the book.  In fact, I am buying a half dozen copies and plan to go through a chapter each week -- including the group discussion questions and personal action steps -- with the music ministry at my church.  I would have done it sooner, but it took me a while to get over how much of my true self this book is going to reveal to everyone.  I'm just sure this Rory Noland guy has been following me around for years....
