The Personal Touch:  What You Really
Need To Know To Succeed In Today's Fast-Paced Business  World
By Terrie Williams with Joe Cooney

You've probably heard the old saying that "It's not what you know, but who you know."  Of course, that statement is really a half-truth because "What you don't know can hurt you."  But there's no doubt who you know is indeed an important factor in succeeding in the entertainment industry or in any other endeavor.  That's where Ms. William's book comes in because she explains what you need to know in order to succeed through those who you need to know.
A lot of it comes to old-fashioned basics and hard work.  Ms. Williams stresses the importance of doing the "little things" in order to accomplish the big things.  Returning phone calls, remembering names, having a firm handshake, making eye contact, and being honest are just some of the small, but socially significant tips, that will add a polish to your schmoozing efforts.  After all, what's the point in meeting someone who might be important to your career or business if you make a bad first impression or your follow-up is ineffective?
The core of the book is in its two sections on Relationships and Reputation.  There you will read Ms. Williams' advice about such things as the art of conversation, the power of the phone, and finding a way to succeed through persistence and creativity (for which she provides many real-life examples).
Some of her advice may seem deceptively simple, but it isn't.   In my 14 years as an entertainment lawyer, I have literally dealt with thousands of people from all over the world.  Out of such a huge number, I would guess that the vast majority of them would find the types of suggestions made in this book to be obvious.  But I can count on my fingers the very few who put have actually put these "obvious" points into practice.  And it's those very few for whom I hold the greatest respect and for whom I have gone beyond the call of duty.  And it's no accident that many of these folks have very successful and productive lives, businesses and careers.  ...as does Ms. Williams and her public relations agency.
Anyone who is truly serious about making it in today's world should read a copy of "The Personal Touch" and, more importantly, put its principles into everyday practice.
